Fine Nomadic Craftsmanship with Modern Clarity
With their compact weave, hand-spun highland wool, and reduced ornamentation, Loribaft rugs embody both cultural heritage and modern interior aesthetics.
Gabbeh Loribaft rugs are hand-knotted in Iran using pure virgin wool. Characterized by earthy tones and simple geometric patterns, they have a clean and natural look. Their lower knot density and slightly coarse texture create a tactile surface that works well in both modern and traditional interiors. By combining traditional Persian weaving techniques with minimalist design, Gabbeh Loribaft rugs add warmth, character, and authenticity to any living space.

Gabbeh Loribaft rugs represent the refined evolution of the traditional Persian Gabbeh. They combine the raw authenticity of nomadic weaving with a denser knot structure and a more precise, contemporary design language.
With their compact weave, hand-spun highland wool, and reduced ornamentation, Loribaft rugs embody both cultural heritage and modern interior aesthetics.
The roots of Gabbeh rugs lie with the Ghashghai and Luri nomadic tribes of southern Iran, particularly in the province of Fars. While traditional Gabbehs were loosely knotted and rustic in character, the Loribaft developed as a finer and more technically sophisticated variation.
The term “Loribaft” refers to weaving traditions of the Luri people and signals enhanced craftsmanship. Today, high-quality Loribaft rugs are primarily woven in Iran, with selected workshops in India also producing variations of this style in differing quality levels.
Although closely related, Gabbeh and Loribaft rugs differ significantly:
coarse knotting
often below 70,000 knots per m²
spontaneous, rustic motifs
very high and soft pile
denser knotting (up to approx. 250,000 knots per m²)
clearer and more refined design
compact and durable structure
balanced, modern appearance
Loribaft rugs therefore appear more structured, elegant, and long-lasting.
Gabbeh Loribaft rugs are typically made from hand-spun virgin wool sourced from highland sheep. The natural lanolin content enhances durability and softness.
Key qualities include:
_ pleasant, soft texture
_ natural resilience
_ long lifespan
_ sustainable material origin
The warp is usually cotton, and in premium pieces sometimes wool.
The pile is soft and dense, usually between 10 and 14 mm. Despite its comfort, the rug remains firm and structurally stable.
The finer knotting results in a calmer and more defined surface compared to rustic Gabbeh rugs.
Gabbeh Loribaft rugs are characterized by reduced, almost graphic designs. Unlike classical Persian rugs, they embrace clarity and simplicity.
Typical design elements include:
_ monochrome or subtly textured backgrounds
_ fine stripes
_ stylized diamonds
_ abstract animal or plant motifs
_ minimal symbolic details
The color spectrum ranges from warm earth tones and beige to blue, green, and muted reds. Natural vegetable dyes create depth without appearing overly vibrant.
Gabbeh Loribaft rugs are particularly suitable for:
_ modern and minimalist interiors
_ Scandinavian-inspired settings
_ natural living concepts with wood and linen
_ open floor plans
_ calm bedrooms or home offices
They add warmth and texture without dominating the room.
Thanks to their dense wool structure, Loribaft rugs are highly durable and well-suited for frequently used areas such as living or dining rooms.
Care recommendations:
_ regular vacuuming
_ professional cleaning when necessary
_ avoid prolonged direct sunlight
_ not machine washable
Many models are reversible, further extending their lifespan.
When selecting a Gabbeh Loribaft rug, pay attention to:
_ knot density and weaving precision
_ quality of hand-spun wool
_ natural dye usage
_ surface consistency
_ authenticity and origin
Iranian Loribaft rugs are generally considered the highest standard.
