Kilim Classic

Kilim Classic

Traditional Kilim rugs are handwoven flat-weaves produced across regions of Anatolia, Persia, and the Caucasus. Unlike pile carpets, Kelims are woven on a loom without knots, using a slit weave technique that creates their characteristic sharp geometric patterns. Historically made by nomadic and village weavers, they were used not only as floor coverings but also as storage sacks, wall hangings, and tent decorations. Most Kilims are woven in wool, often with wool wefts on a wool foundation, and traditionally dyed with natural plant-based pigments.

The Rugbloom Guide

Kilim Rugs – Handwoven Flatweaves in Wool

A kilim rug has no pile: its pattern is created entirely by weaving, thread by thread. That makes it light, flat and often reversible. Our collection brings together handwoven kilims from Persia, Anatolia and Afghanistan – bold nomadic pieces as well as finely woven, calmer designs. Every rug is an inspected one-of-a-kind piece. A kilim suits you if you love colour and pattern but don't want a thick, heavy rug – in a hallway, under a dining table or in a pared-back living room.

INTRO

Handwoven, flat and versatile: what makes a kilim special

01

What is a kilim rug?

In a hand-knotted rug, each knot is tied around the warp threads and the cut ends form the pile. A kilim is a flatweave instead: coloured weft threads pass through the warp and are beaten down so tightly that they hide the warp completely.

Where two colour areas meet, the weaver turns the thread back at the last warp. This leaves small slits – a technique called slit tapestry. It also explains why kilims mostly show stepped, geometric patterns: long vertical lines would create slits that are too long.

02

Kilim rugs from Persia, Anatolia and Afghanistan

For centuries, nomadic and village communities wove kilims as floor coverings, tent hangings, blankets and bags. You can find more of this tradition among our nomadic and village rugs. Each region has its own signature.

Persian kilims

The province of Fars produces bold pieces with large diamonds and medallions, often woven by Qashqai nomads. Senneh kilims from western Iran are known for their fine weave: small-scale patterns, often with herati or boteh motifs.

Anatolian kilims

Turkish kilims feature clear, graphic designs and many traditional symbols, such as the elibelinde – a stylised figure with hands on hips. See also our Turkish and Caucasian rugs.

Afghan kilims

Afghan kilims often have large geometric fields and strong colours. Well-known examples include Maimana kilims from the north of the country. Many of these pieces are woven by Uzbek and Turkmen families. With their colourful, large-scale patterns, Maimana kilims often look surprisingly modern, which makes them a great fit for contemporary interiors.

03

Material and quality: how to recognise a good kilim

Most kilims are woven from sheep's wool, on a warp of wool or cotton. Good wool feels firm and contains natural lanolin, which helps repel dirt.

Also look for a dense, even weave without loose areas, straight edges and intact ends. Slight colour variations, known as abrash, are not a flaw: they appear when wool is dyed in different batches and are a sign of handwork.

Every product description lists origin, size, material and condition, so you can compare pieces side by side.

04

Which kilim rug suits which room?

Because it lies so flat, a kilim works wherever doors need to swing freely or chairs are moved: in the hallway, under the dining table, beside the bed. A kilim runner gives a long, narrow hallway rhythm without adding bulk.

In the living room, a large kilim anchors the seating area. In light, minimalist rooms, pieces with a few strong colours work well; in a boho interior, patterns and colours can play together. Vintage kilims with softly faded colours bring calm to a room. If you prefer a contemporary look, browse our modern kilims.

Tip: a non-slip rug pad keeps the lightweight rug in place.

Kilim rug FAQ

Here are the questions our customers ask us most often about kilims.

Kilim, kelim or gelim – what is the difference?

They all mean the same thing: a flatwoven rug without pile. “Kilim” comes from Turkish, “gelim” from Persian; “kelim” is the usual spelling in German.

Can a kilim rug be used on both sides?

Most can, because the front and back look almost the same. Turning the rug from time to time helps it wear more evenly.

Are kilim rugs durable?

Yes, a densely woven wool kilim lasts for many years. Because it has no pile, it is thinner than a knotted rug, so a non-slip pad helps protect it, especially in hallways.

How do I clean a kilim rug?

Vacuum without a rotating brush and turn the rug every few months so it fades evenly. Blot spills straight away with clean water rather than rubbing. For a deep clean, we recommend professional washing. You'll find more in our rug care guide.
